The DBS Headstones Project Is An Ongoing Project.
HISTORY OF THE MEMORIAL PROJECT
SPONSORED BY THE DETROIT BLUES SOCIETY
The Detroit Blues Society is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization
dedicated to the promotion, teaching and preservation of the unique
American musical art form known as The Blues, with particular
emphasis placed on the Blues tradition in the greater Detroit area.
The Society was established in 1985.
Finding that many Detroit area blues musicians are buried in
unmarked graves the Detroit Blues Society initiated a project to
rectify this unfortunate situation. The Society assisted in raising
money for a grave stone for Eddie James Son House and Willie D
Warren. More recently the Society took on sole responsibility for a
series of memorial benefits and concerts to raise money for other
important blues musicians in need of a proper grave marker.
In 2006 the Society placed a grave stone for Clarence Butler and one
for Curtis Butler, “The Butler Twins”. Following that a stone was
placed for Calvin Frazier in 2009, Louis Bo Collins in 2010, Uncle
Jessie White in 2010 and Vernon “Boogie Woogie Red” Harrison in
2011.
It is sad to report that there are many more important blues
celebrities in unmarked graves. The Memorial Project will continue
for years to come. The Society has an ongoing quest to locate
musicians in need of a grave stone and to provide one. Donations may
be mailed to: Memorial Fund, Detroit Blues Society, P.O. Box 8006,
