BLUES AND JAZZ AT THE ELKS

Plymouth-Ann Arbor Elks Lodge #325

Welcome to our January 2016 concert bulletin. Check our web site for details on all the Lodge activities at www.PlymouthAnnArborElks325.com.

Blues with RJ’s NOLA Band – January 12th

Drummer/bandleader RJ Spangler’s NOLA Band celebrates the music of New Orleans. Together with RJ’s musical brother of many years, T-Bone Paxton (vocals/trombone), there is a wealth of experience backing great rhythm and blues artists from the Crescent City. They were the band of choice for the legendary vocalist Johnny Adams and guitarist Earl King. Spangler had a twenty year relationship as bandleader for the legendary piano man and vocalist Eddie Bo. Joining Spangler and Paxton will be Alicia Marie on guitar, Gwen MacPhee on stand up bass and Goode Wyche III on tenor sax. There is a $5 donation at the door.

Jazz with The Dave Bennett Quartet – January 26th

Dave Bennett, clarinetist extraordinaire, is among a great class of musicians under 30 years old who can bridge the Swing Era to modern jazz to rock-a-billy. He has gained success for his Benny Goodman style and is booked nationally at major jazz festivals and symphony orchestras for his Goodman program. We are honored to start our 2016 Jazz at the Elks on Tuesday, January 26th with the Dave Bennett Quartet. Performing along with Bennett will be Cliff Monear on piano, drummer Doug Cobb and Jeff Pedraz on bass. The $10 donation at the door includes hors d’oeuvers.

THE RULES:

The overall, declared winner of the event will go to Memphis, Tennessee to play at the International Blues Challenge Youth Showcase, on Beale Street. This event will feature a worldwide cast of talented young people showcasing their Blues talents for record labels, media, festivals, managers, talent buyers and the fans.
One of our former Youth winners now has a recording contract, tours with national acts, and lives in Nashville - here is your big chance!

This event is being staged to discover, encourage, mentor, and showcase the “next generation” of Detroit Blues Artists, while teaching today’s youth the importance and value of historic American Roots music.
